Opinions move in inches, not in miles

It would be incredible if a single, insightful conversation could change a person’s mind about something. Unfortunately, that is rarely the case. Our opinions are formed from personal experiences over time and shifting someone’s opinion requires you to undercut the lesson that the person learned from many of those personal experiences. That’s a tall order. But repeated interactions from one or many people who share the same values can shift a person’s opinion over time.

Caring for other people is a political motivator

Many people believe that they care for other people. At the same time, many people do not question their political beliefs unless someone asks them about them directly. Asking people to square their belief that they care for other people with their political actions can spur people to investigate their political choices.
